The headlands in Fort Bragg, Calif., is the site of former Georgia-Pacific lumber mill which closed in 2002. Mendocino Railway, the operator of Skunk Train, acquired the property in 2021 and has since been involved in multiple lawsuits with the City of Fort Bragg. The two parties agreed to pause litigation in November 2024 to collaborate on a 400-acre development at the site. (Mendocino Railway via Bay City News)

FORT BRAGG, CA., 4/29/26 — The citizen committee Project-HERE will host a meeting at Town Hall May 7 for a presentation by Farallon Consulting’s Steffany Aguilar. Aguilar, a professional geologist, conducts environmental assessments and investigations, site characterizations, remediation activities, and compliance work.

This workshop will focus solely on the remaining contamination and options for remediation of the last section still under orders from the California Department of Toxic Substance Control for cleanup by the responsible parties. The workshop will not discuss development options but will concentrate on environmental health and safety.

New information and analysis will be presented including recent citizen science sampling of mussels off Soldier Point.

The City Council’s ad hoc committee on the mill site, Mayor Jason Godeke and councilmember Lindy Peters, will participate in the presentation. Community members will be able to submit questions to Aguilar and to committee members.

Aguilar’s expertise was funded through a grant from DTSC. The meeting is at Fort Bragg Town Hall, 416 North Franklin St., May 7, 5:30 p.m. The meeting will also be available on Zoom.
