MENDOCINO CO., 4/3/26 — A 40-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly trying to start a fire behind a business north of Ukiah earlier this week, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.

Shane King was arrested after deputies responded shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday to a report of a disturbance in the 1400 block of Lovers Lane.

Authorities learned that someone was seen behind a business and there was evidence of a recently ignited fire near an electrical box. Surveillance footage showed a man gathering combustible materials, igniting a fire and adding materials to the flames before leaving the area on a bicycle, sheriff’s officials said.

The fire was out prior to the arrival of deputies, and investigators identified the suspect as King, who had a separate pending case involving fire-related activity, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

King was arrested Thursday morning on North State Street in Ukiah and allegedly made a statement indicating involvement in the fire. Deputies recovered a lighter from King during the arrest.

He was booked into Mendocino County Jail on suspicion of arson, prowling, violating a court order, and other offenses, and remains in custody on $65,000 bail, sheriff’s officials said.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at (707) 463-4086 and choose option 1. Information can also be provided anonymously via a tip line at (707) 234-2100.
