UKIAH, CA., 1/28/26 – Adventist Health Ukiah Valley celebrated the reopening of its newly renovated café and kitchen Thursday, marking the completion of a long-anticipated project aimed at improving the dining experience for patients, visitors and staff.

The refreshed space, now known as the Code Brew Café, reopened after a seven-month closure for upgrades to both the café and the hospital kitchen.

The café’s new name was selected through a staff vote, with Code Brew Café chosen from more than 150 submissions. The name is a play on “Code Blue,” the call for a life-threatening medical emergency.

The updated café now offers complimentary coffee from Black Oak Coffee Roasters, tea and water, as well as bread and baked goods from Schat’s Bakeries & Café.

The menu has expanded to include all-day dining options, daily specials and meals-to-go, with additional offerings developed in partnership with Ukiah’s Gather Kitchen, a spinoff of Left Coast Seafood that offers healthy meals.

At the opening on Thursday, guests enjoyed tacos, burgers, pastas and other offerings made from scratch in the new kitchen. There is also a new salad bar and many vegetarian options, said Cici Winiger, marketing and communications manager at Adventist Health.

“We have many regulars from the community, particularly seniors who come to the cafe for the food because of affordability and the ability to have healthy options,” said Winiger, “This is especially important to us, with the rising cost of food and knowing that many seniors are on fixed income. For example, one can get a full meal with an entree, and sides for $7-8.”

The renovated cafe and kitchen also offers new dining options for patients. The new menus include expanded breakfast and hot meal items.

“More than a physical refresh, this project was about elevating the experience for both our patients and our team,” said Jeff Mock, the hospital’s operations director. He noted that the changes align with the hospital’s focus on whole-person health and the idea that nutrition plays a key role in healing.

The new space was built in partnership with Thurston Auto Plaza, a longtime major donor to the hospital.

Designed as a welcoming space for patients, families and staff, the Code Brew Café is intended to serve as a gathering place within the hospital — reflecting the role food plays in comfort, connection and recovery.

The Code Brew Cafe is open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Adventist Health Ukiah Valley, 275 Hospital Dr., Ukiah, (707) 462-3111, https://www.adventisthealth.org/ukiah-valley/patients-and-visitors/amenities/.

  1. What a treat for everyone! It’s gorgeous! We’re friends with Josefina Hernandez. (Please forgive me, if I misspelled her name.) She is a wonderful person, that works incredibly hard, has integrity in everything she does, is very kind and professional. The hospital is blessed to have such a dedicated employee.
