LOS ANGELES, 11/21/25 – East Bay Congressman Eric Swalwell announced Thursday that he will run for California governor next year.
Swalwell, who frequently challenges President Donald Trump and helped manage the 2021 impeachment case against Trump, announced his bid for governor on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Thursday night, and on his campaign website.
California is under attack, he said.
“The President has militarized our streets, canceled cancer research, zeroed out clean energy climate projects, and is chasing our immigrant friends and neighbors through their workplaces, kids’ schools, and houses of worship,” Swalwell said.
“California’s next governor has two jobs. One, keep the worst president in history out of our homes, out of our streets, and out of our lives.”
The second job is to bring “a new California,” he said. “It’s great that we can say we are the fourth largest economy in the world. But what does that mean if you work your ass off and don’t have a stake in it? Nothing.”
He said his priorities for the state are homes and jobs.
Swalwell, 45, represents California’s 14th congressional district, covering most of eastern Alameda County and part of central Contra Costa County. He ran for president in 2020 before dropping out to endorse Joe Biden.
The field of gubernatorial candidates is steadily growing to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom, who terms out next year.
Earlier this week, billionaire activist Tom Steyer threw his hat in the ring. Other Democrats in the running include former Rep. Katie Porter, former state controller Betty Yee, former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Can we please elect a governor who cares more about California than building a resume to run for prez? Swalwell has questionable judgement— he slept with a Chinese spy! His sleeze factor is 10/10. He is not good for our state.

1. To “fight” Trump/Oppose Trump/Impeach Trump again! TRUMP TRUMP TRUMP!
2. Do something about jobs. Will need to look into it.
3. Say something about the homeless. Will think of something.
