MENDOCINO CO., 10/7/25 – There is no doubt that the Mendocino and Sonoma coasts are two of the most beautiful places on earth.

A new exhibit of paintings at the Gualala Arts Center, “Radiant Seascapes,” bolsters that opinion.

Featuring the paintings of Sergio Lopez and Vanessa Walsh, the exhibit captures the intensity and natural emotions of the ocean and coast, with the Mendonoma region as the focus.

“Through gouache and oil, the artists explore the elemental tension where land meets sea, and light becomes memory,” the exhibition statement reads.

Light is a tool used by both painters in their works.

Walsh’s ocean waves comprise the blues, grays and greens of the sea, with foamy whitecaps that reflect the bright sun.

Shadows and glowing clouds add contrasting solidity and softness to Lopez’s cliffside compositions.

The emotional connection each painter has for their subject is evident. If their goal is to remind the viewer of their own emotional affinity for the coast, then they are succeeding.

“Radiant Seascapes” opens Friday, Oct. 10 with a public reception from 4-6 p.m. at the Gualala Arts Center, 46501 Old State Highway, Gualala. The show runs through Nov. 16. Call (707) 884-1138 or visit https://gualalaarts.org for more information.
