FORT BRAGG, CA., 8/25/26 – Fort Bragg’s growing collection of public art murals will be completed just in time for the gray whale migration which starts in early winter.
Located on the facade of North Coast Brewing Company, “The Gray Whale in Kelp” will be the city’s largest mural. Created by artist Larry Foster and painted by Marta Alonso Canillar, the expansive mural in blue tones depicts a gray whale amid a green kelp forest.
It is expected to be unveiled during KelpFest, a festival centered on the celebration and conservation of the kelp forests off the Mendocino Coast, the city said.
It’s all part of a partnership the city has with the Alleyway Art Project to beautify the city through murals.

There are over 25 murals dotting alleyways, storefronts, garages, and office buildings around the city.
The growing number of works range from abstract pieces to realism, created by artists that call Fort Bragg home, and others who visit just for the privilege of bringing color to the city streets.
“Investing in public art––especially murals––is an investment in the heart and identity of our downtown,” city manager Isaac Whippy said. “These murals don’t just beautify our streets, they tell our story, support local artists, and invite residents and visitors alike to engage with Fort Bragg in a more meaningful way.”
A self-guided walking tour of the city’s murals is available at https://fortbraggalleywayart.org/.
