MENDOCINO CO., 8/20/25 – When Mendocino County residents visit their local library they can borrow books, movies and now radon detectors, the library system said.

Partnering with the California Department of Public Health, Mendocino County Library is now offering portable radon detectors for checkout at its eight libraries.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, radon can be found in any home –– no matter the age or condition. It’s a naturally occurring radioactive gas that emanates from decaying uranium found in soil.

Radon can be found in any type of home. It moves up from the soil, through the air, and into cracks and holes in a home’s foundation. Once it gets inside, it remains trapped and can continue to build up. Additionally, radon is a carcinogen and the leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S., the EPA said.

Now Mendocino County Library is working to increase awareness of the danger of radon and its associated health risks.

Residents can check out a radon detector from the library for up to 21 days. The devices are easy to use, the library system said. Users simply plug the detector in and receive real-time, daily or weekly ratings. Once testing is complete, return it to the library for others to check out.

If a high radon level is detected, residents should contact the state’s California Radon Hotline at 1-800-745-7236 or Radonprogram@cdph.ca.gov for information on fixing a radon problem.

The radon detectors are one of the many items the library system offers for checkout through its “Library of Things” program, which includes state park passes, toolkits and laptops. More information is available at https://www.mendolibrary.org/borrow/library-of-things.
