MENDOCINO CO., 8/19/25 – The Mendocino County Office of Education this week announced that applications are being accepted for a vacancy on the county Board of Education.
MCOE is seeking applicants to represent Trustee Area 3, which includes Covelo, Brooktrails, Laytonville and Willits. The Trustee Areas are the same as the county’s supervisorial districts.

According to MCOE, the vacancy is due to Area 3 Trustee Michelle Hutchins accepting a job at Willits Unified School District, making her ineligible to serve on the board. Hutchins was elected to represent Trustee Area 3 in the November election.
The board is made up of five trustees each representing a different supervisorial district.
According to MCOE, each trustee must live in the area they represent and serve four-year terms. The applicant that is selected to fill Trustee Area 3 will serve only through December 2026. If the appointee wishes to continue serving as a trustee, they will have to run in the June 2026 primary election to hold their seat.
Eligible applicants must be a citizen of California, a resident of Trustee Area 3, 18 years or older, a registered voter and not be legally disqualified for holding public office.
Trustees are paid $316.77 a month, which is applied to the cost of MCOE health insurance. If the trustee opts out of health care, they will be paid a monthly stipend.
Applications are available online and at the MCOE River Campus Office, 2240 Old River Road, Ukiah, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. now through Sept. 4.
The chosen applicant will be notified by Oct. 3.
