MENDOCINO CO., 8/8/25 – The second heat wave of the year will arrive in Mendocino County on Saturday, triggering the National Weather Service to issue a heat advisory.
According to the weather service, temperatures as high as 106 degrees are expected in some inland areas on Saturday and Sunday.
Laytonville, Leggett, Piercy, Brooktrails and Willits can expect highs in the mid-90s. The heat advisory is in place from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday for these areas.
The heat advisory is in place for Calpella, Ukiah, Redwood Valley, Talmage, Potter Valley, Covelo and Hopland from 9 a.m. Saturday through 1 a.m. Monday. These areas will see highs above 100 degrees.
Talmage is expected to be the hottest place in the county Friday with a forecast high of 106 degrees.
With hot temperatures comes a higher risk of heat-related illnesses. “Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors,” the weather service said. “Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.”
NWS also advises that people who must work outside take extra care: “Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.”
No cooling centers were announced as of Wednesday morning, but local libraries are open during their regular hours.

I would love to read about when local governments are required to provide cooling centers during heat waves. There are still many people living in the county that do not have air conditioning. Heat waves happen when governments are closed for business. Thank you.
Hi Linda – There is no formal policy in the county or any local cities as to when cooling centers are activated. The last one was in July 2024 when there was an excessive heat warning.
