FORT BRAGG, CA., 4/1/25 – A Fort Bragg man was arrested Friday on suspicion of attempted homicide after allegedly assaulting and choking a woman, the Fort Bragg Police Department said.
Officers responded to a call for a welfare check at a residence in the 100 block of Ebbing Way in Fort Bragg on Thursday around 4 p.m. The caller had expressed concern that a woman may have been assaulted.
According to police, when officers arrived at the residence, they heard a woman screaming for help. A man was heard attempting to quiet the woman. He prevented her from opening the door for the officers.
Officers forced the door open to find a man who proceeded to run upstairs, away from the officers. He was apprehended after a brief struggle without injury and identified as 67-year-old Christopher Grewer of Fort Bragg, police said.
Further investigation found that Grewer had an argument with the woman, which led to him allegedly physically assaulting her and choking her on three occasions while threatening to kill her if she contacted police. He also allegedly took her phone and refused to let her seek medical care.
The victim was transported to Adventist Health Mendocino Coast Hospital in Fort Bragg after she was found to have multiple physical injuries, police said. She was later released.
Grewer was arrested on suspicion of four felonies: attempted homicide, domestic violence, false imprisonment and violation of a court order. Grewer was booked into Mendocino County Jail on $500,000 bail. An emergency protective order was secured for the victim.
The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Pacheco at (707) 964-2800, ext. 246 or apacheco@fortbragg.com.
