MENDOCINO CO., 10/11/24 – Two years ago, chefs Stephanie Butler and Nick Dorgan started taking over the Waiting Room in Mendocino each Sunday evening, churning out self-described “New school Americana.”

Now, the pair is taking over famed Café Beaujolais every Sunday and Monday to turn a fine dining favorite into a colorful tribute to the heyday of midcentury supper clubs and steakhouses.

“We will be serving an expanded dinner menu, desserts, a full wine list curated to match our food, beer — the whole nine yards,” said Butler. “We are also revamping the whole look of the dining room — it’s a completely different place from the usual Beaujolais.”

Butler and Dorgan pull inspiration from old school dining. Think San Francisco icons the Swan Oyster Depot or Original Joe’s meets Bistro Jeanty in Yountville.

From that, they add a dash of Trader Vic’s, combine that with American diner sensibility, and finish it off with California’s love for localvore cuisine and voilà, you have Floyd & Connie’s.

The pop-up menus are a mix of shareable plates and heartier entrees.

Appetizers include deviled eggs with fried capers ($10), ricotta toast with stone fruit and spicy honey ($13), hot Dungeness crab dip with sweet chili sauce and fried wonton chips ($17), and fried calamari ($16).

Entree offerings comprise Squash casserole with smoked mozzarella and Old Bay Ritz Cracker topping ($25), a hanger steak with crispy potatoes, scallion butter, horseradish and tomato-onion salad ($35), and rotating seasonal specials, including catch of the day.

Offers change seasonally with a selection of Floyd & Connie favorites building the backbone of the menu.

Butler and Dorgan partner with various local purveyors, including sourcing bread from Fort Bragg’s Hard Head Bread, Filigree Farm in Anderson Valley, among others.

The menu also includes desserts, wine, beer and low alcohol cocktails.

According to Butler and Dorgan, “adventurous kids would have fun,” with the menu. “But we do not offer any kids menu and are not generally geared to be family-friendly.”

And who are Floyd and Connie? Dorgan’s grandparents who reside in upstate New York.

Floyd & Connie’s residency takes place every Sunday and Monday from 5-8:30 p.m. at Café Beaujolais at 961 Ukiah St., Mendocino. Reservations recommended; walk-ins welcome. Learn more at floydandconnies.com

  1. These two overweight sick humans represent the health care crises in America which costs the citizens over $4,000,000,000,000 annually. Do not eat ANTHING that these two eat!!

    1. Why was this comment allowed to be published? Mr. Lee’s uninformed, body-shaming, medically ridiculous and mean-spirited comment should have been blocked by the Mendocino Voice. This community is all about mutual support, not bringing down hard-working entrepreneurs who are trying to find a path in a very tough business. I hope the MV reconsiders this terrible decision, and that Mr. Lee enjoys a salad in peace, alone, as he deserves to be.
