MENDOCINO CO., 9/23/24 – A man told Mendocino County Sheriff’s deputies that his girlfriend was irrational and pointed a gun at him.

There was no gun, deputies said Saturday, but there was more than a pound of psychedelic mushrooms involved.

Deputies were dispatched about 8:30 p.m. Thursday to the 13000 block of Mountain House Road in Hopland to a report of a man being held at gunpoint.

Michael A. Giles, 41, of Willits, told deputies he was driving with his girlfriend when she became paranoid and said they were being followed. Giles said his girlfriend shined a flashlight at him from behind, and he believed she was pointing a pistol at him.

Giles never actually saw a gun but feared for his safety and pulled over, deputies said. He was able to walk away from his bus and contacted law enforcement for help.

Giles gave deputies permission to look inside his converted school bus for the pistol. While searching for a firearm, deputies located 1.54 pounds of psilocybin mushrooms, packaged and unpackaged, along with scales and extra bags.

Deputies determined there was no pistol nor was a gun ever pointed at Giles.

Giles was accused of felony possession and transportation of a controlled substance for sale.
