MENDOCINO CO., 9/2/24 – A Covelo man was arrested for allegedly making criminal threats, the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday.
On Wednesday at about 11 p.m., deputies were sent to the 23800 block of Howard Street in Covelo after a 33-year-old woman reported being in a domestic argument with James Mathis, 41. Mathis had left the house before deputies arrived, the Sheriff’s Office said.
After an investigation, deputies believed they had probable cause to arrest Mathis and released a BOLO alert, or Be-On-The-Lookout, to all law enforcement in the county in the hopes of locating him.
By Thursday, Mathis had still not been found. Deputies reached out to the Mendocino County Behavioral Health Response Team to try and connect with Mathis. The team contacted him that evening and convinced him to peacefully surrender, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Mathis was placed under arrest on suspicion of felony criminal threats and battery; he was booked into the Mendocino County Jail on a $30,000 bond. He was still in custody as of Sunday evening.
