SACRAMENTO, CA., 8/28/24 –– Teachers at state-subsidized preschools will get more days set aside for training, and get training specifically for serving children who speak languages other than English, under a bill that passed the California Legislature Monday.

If signed by the governor, Assembly Bill 1947 will increase the number of staff training days that all California State Preschool programs can hold, from two days per year to six days per year. If a preschool has at least 25% of students that speak a language other than English at home, then at least one out of 3 training days has to be focused on supporting those students.

The bill would give the state superintendent of public instruction until Aug. 1, 2025 to come up with regulations to implement the changes.
