MENDOCINO Co., 6/8/24 – When it comes to removing greenhouse gas from the atmosphere, trees may be nature’s best-known tool at sequestration. However, according to researchers at the University of California Davis Earth and Planetary Sciences Department and Bodega Marine Laboratory, the ocean is just as important to fighting climate change.

The ocean’s role in climate change will be the focus of Thursday’s virtual talk hosted by the Noyo Center for Marine Science. The program, titled “Seagrass: A Climate Change Solution,” will focus on how seagrass, which is found on every continent except Antarctica, sequesters carbon, provides coastal protection, enhances biodiversity and stabilizes sediments.

The guest speaker will be Elisabeth H. Sellinger, a student at the University of California Davis Earth and Planetary Sciences Department and the Bodega Marine Laboratory. Sellinger works with Dr. Tessa Hill, one of the world’s leading geochemists and oceanographers. Alongside Hill, Sellinger researches seagrass carbon storage and how it can help restore coastal ecosystems along the California coast.

The talk is free and takes place on Zoom at 6 p.m. Thursday. Registration is required here
