UKIAH, 7/31/19 — The wildfire that began at the at Usal Beach last week is holding steady at 130 acres, and firefighters have attained 70% containment around the fire. The fire has been largely quiescent for the last several days, with firefighters conducting mostly mopping up operations. These efforts have been made difficult by the extremely rugged terrain, but progress continues apace.
By this time last year the Ranch and River fires were rapidly growing inland. This year California has not yet seen the extreme fires of the past two seasons, with lower temperatures and a late rain meaning that many parts of the state remain relatively less dry that in past years.
Still firefighting authorities are cautioning the public to remain vigilant. Said Scott McLean, spokesman for Cal Fire:
“It just shows you how volatile the vegetation is — to catch fire…The public cannot be complacent.” He added that there have as yet not been any major fires this season in the state, but there have been many small fire and, “those little ones can grow…so everyone needs to stay on their game.”
