UPDATE 12:52 p.m. — Scanner traffic indicates that forward progress of the fire has been stopped — however, one outbuilding was destroyed by the fire.

MENDOCINO CO., 11/17/18 — A small vegetation fire, apparently burning mostly in dry grass, has broken out about two miles north of Laytonville. As of 12:40 p.m. the fire was described as being 3 acres with a slow rate of spread, and threatening one structure.

Cal Fire was hitting the fire with an air attack but as of about 12:50 p.m. had released several aircraft to return to base — a good indication that ground crews have the situation in hand.

  1. This started adjacent to Black Oak Ranch, at our partner Marcia’s place. Our little fire truck and crew of two were first on the scene, and emptied Junior the Firetruck’s tank to protect the house. Our crew says the fire started on an uphill slope, and was moving slow. There were two planes dropping retardent within minutes. It’s a close call that seems to be under control at this time.
