MENDOCINO Co., 5/21/18 — After nearly 50 years, the historic Zacha’s Bay Window Gallery in Mendocino will close its doors at the end of May now that the building it occupies has been sold. The gallery’s final show, showcasing works by “Mendocino Heritage” movement artists in a variety of mediums, will be on display seven days a week until May 31.
The final show at the Zacha’s Bay Window Gallery features six different artists, including Bill Zacha and his friends, who participated in the founding of the Mendocino Art Center and helped create a burgeoning community of artists along the Mendocino coast. The final show includes: William Zacha, Dorr Bothwell, Hilda Pertha, Fran Moyer, Toshi Yoshida and Charles Marchant Stevenson, plus ceramics by Mendocino master potters Sasha and Sue Makovkin, and includes “oil paintings, acrylics, watercolors, india inks, serigraphs, woodblock prints, ceramics, polychrome wood sculpture, and Bill Zacha’s bronzetti: small but powerful cast bronze nude figures.” A limited number of reproductions will be available for sale.
“People have celebrated, collected, and studied this movement of artists for decades. Now, those who have been moved and influenced by their work can finally see originals, all together, in context—as a collection not just of art, but of Mendocino history,” said Lucia Zacha, Bill Zacha’s daughter, in a press release.
Their works will be on display every day from 11a.m. – 5p.m. until the gallery closes on May 31. More information about the gallery can be found here.

HISTORIC MENDOCINO GALLERY TO CLOSE ITS DOORS FOREVER
The final show of Zacha’s Bay Window Gallery features spectacular art from the estates of the Mendocino Heritage Artists.
Mendocino, California – After 48 years, William Zacha’s historic Bay Window Gallery building has been sold. While its new function will reflect changing times, the Gallery’s final exhibition—the Finale—showcases the very best of Mendocino’s creative heritage. The Mendocino Heritage Artists Grand Finale Exhibit is open 11:00 to 5:00, seven days a week, through May 31st, when the show ends and the gallery closes permanently.
The Finale features spectacular art from the estates of the six Mendocino Heritage Artists: William Zacha, Dorr Bothwell, Hilda Pertha, Fran Moyer, Toshi Yoshida and Charles Marchant Stevenson, plus ceramics by Mendocino master potters Sasha and Sue Makovkin.
The Heritage Artists are Mendocino Art Center founder Bill Zacha and his artist friends, who came to Mendocino to teach at the Art Center in the early days and stayed to help Bill realize his dream. Their artwork is internationally known, and critically acclaimed.
The impressive collection of original artwork in the Finale includes oil paintings, acrylics, watercolors, india inks, serigraphs, woodblock prints, ceramics, polychrome wood sculpture, and Bill Zacha’s bronzetti: small but powerful cast bronze nude figures. A limited number of authorized reproductions of paintings and serigraphs are also available.
“So much has been written about these artists. We really got swept away in all the archives of material,” said Lucia Zacha, daughter of William Zacha, about organizing the show. “People have celebrated, collected, and studied this movement of artists for decades. Now, those who have been moved and influenced by their work can finally see originals, all together, in context—as a collection not just of art, but of Mendocino history.”
The gallery will host a Second Saturday reception with champagne and hors d’oeuvres on Saturday, May 12th, starting at 5:00 pm.
