About the Mendocino Voice

Local news matters — and we take our mission as a nonprofit, public-service news organization seriously. We try to surface useful, important — and sometimes entertaining — information for our readers and then verify and distribute it to you via our website, newsletters, social platforms and partners.

A professional staff

The Mendocino Voice is part of the 501(c)3 Bay City News Foundation, which has 24/7 experienced editors, partnerships going back to 1979, and a robust mentoring program for new journalists, including those from the California Local News Fellowship program, Report for America, universities and other institutions. The foundation covers 13 counties from Mendocino to Marin to Monterey, and reporters generally live in the communities they cover. It has a full-time, professional staff and also employs a network of local freelancers around the region, 10 paid college interns every summer and high school journalism training programs as well. We are supported by tax-deductible donations, grants, sponsorships and reader contributions.

Independence

We are not affiliated with any other organization and stand by our independence as a professional newsroom but we do welcome collaborations and distribute news to dozens of other media outlets through our affiliated Bay City News Service.

Building our team

If you’re in Mendocino County and would like to join our team as a reporter, columnist or contributor, check out our freelancer pitching guide. We insist on accurate, original reporting and do provide some coaching for new writers. We’re looking for all kinds of content, photography, columnists and reporting work. We also cover regional news at LocalNewsMatters.org so check out that free website for news outside of Mendocino County.

How we started
The Mendocino Voice was started by local journalists in 2016 to provide coverage of the county’s key stories – including breaking coverage of events as they happen, in-depth coverage of county issues, and stories highlighting the life and culture of the Mendocino area. It became part of the nonprofit Bay City News Foundation in 2024, which is run by longtime journalist Katherine Ann Rowlands, who regularly spends time in Mendocino County. You can read about her back story here.
