MENDOCINO CO., 9/4/25 – A beach hazard warning is in place for the Mendocino Coast and Southwestern Humboldt County over the holiday weekend.
The National Weather Service expects an increased threat of sneaker waves starting late Friday night through Monday evening. According to the alert, “large, unexpected waves can sweep across the beach without warning, sweeping people into the sea, jetties and beaches.”
Large items such as logs can be moved by the sneaker waves, crushing people and pets caught underneath, the weather service added.
“Don’t be fooled by an ocean that looks calm,” the alert states. “There can be 30 minutes of small waves before a sneaker wave strikes.”
People are asked to avoid rocks, jetties and steep beaches. The weather service also advises to remain far back from the water and to never turn your back to the ocean.
