WILLITS, CA., 3/28/26 — Saturday morning, 1,000 protesters lined Main Street in Willits for the third iteration of a No Kings protest, part of a nationwide effort of more than 3,000 protests in all 50 states telegraphing a message of disapproval of the current Trump administration. Protesters began gathering at 10 a.m. before marching to Bud Snider Park at 11, chanting and waving signs along the way.

Most protesters held homemade signs or flags, some were in costume and several wore safety vests, designating them as volunteers serving different roles, such as peacekeepers or crossing guards. There were also eight- and 10-foot-tall puppets of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, two Minneapolis residents fatally shot by federal agents in January, as well as a 12-foot-tall puppet of a crying Uncle Sam.
“What does democracy look like?”
After marching to Bud Snider Park, protesters gathered in front of a stage set up on the north end of the park to listen to music and speakers. Among the speakers was outgoing District 3 Supervisor John Haschak, who led the crowd in a chant and read a poem.
“When I say, ‘What does democracy look like,’ you say, ‘This is what democracy looks like,’” Haschak said into the mic.

The crowd chanted in response and cheered. Haschak then read a Lawrence Ferlinghetti poem, followed by a rewrite Haschak did of the poem to fit modern concerns.
“Pity the nation that subsidizes coal and oil in the face of climate change,” Haschak read. “Pity the nation that sends our neighbors without due process to El Salvadorian prisons and shoots innocent people on the streets in Minneapolis. Pity the nation that passes a big, ugly bill that takes away healthcare for millions and food from children so that billionaires can get tax breaks. Pity the nation that demonizes people for whom they love, where they are from, for being their authentic selves, pity the nation for starting wars to distract from the Epstein files. But we can’t wallow in pity,” Haschak finished. “It is time to take action.”
Bill Govan served as a peacekeeper and crossing guard for the protest, taking march organizer Willits Indivisible’s nonviolence training to prepare for his dual roles. At previous protests, Govan wore his pink pussyhat, popularized after the 2017 Women’s March, but this year he opted for a different pink hat, more practical for the late March California weather: a light pink baseball cap that said, “resist.”

“Why would we ever want to have a president that if you had a daughter, you wouldn’t want that daughter to date them?” Govan said. “I have two daughters, and I wouldn’t let anybody, anything similar to him [Trump] near them.”
Govan expressed something he found to be ironic about rhetoric surrounding anti-fascism, often referred to by conservatives as “antifa.”
“The fact that the Republicans and Trumpers can talk about being anti-fascist as a bad thing means they don’t understand that means they’re pro-fascist., T Hitler and Mussolini and Franco, those were fascists. Trump’s right there with them.”
Govan said it’s time to get back to American values, like the Golden Rule.

“Do unto others, as you would have had them do unto you,” Govan quoted. “That’s kind of what the Constitution was written about. Obviously, it wasn’t perfect when it was written, but we’ve been trying, until recently, to continue moving towards the original ideals, and at this point, we’re moving in the opposite direction, which is really disheartening.”
Govan said he would like to see an administration that wants to help working-class people.
“I would [like to] see the focus becoming on helping average Americans, rather than giving billionaires all the benefits in the world and having a president who’s just constantly making money and selling our country to line his own pockets.”
Alex Rounds, a protester with a sign that depicted Toad from the Frog and Toad children’s books said the character Toad came to mind as he is known for being optimistic. Rounds expressed her reasons for being at the protest.

“The assault on democracy is ubiquitous. It’s all aspects from the rights of the people of the United States to the rights of immigrants, feelings of safety, the abuses of ICE,” Rounds said. “Abuses of power, mismanagement of tax dollars. It’s kind of endless.”
The scene at the park was lively with folks swaying to the music near the stage and others mingling and chatting around the park. Booths offered free water and snacks and a place to sign up for the Willits Indivisible mailing list. As the speeches ended and people began drifting away, kids clambered on the playground equipment and dogs raced across the grass. It looked like any weekend day in Willits—but for the hundreds of homemade signs and tired faces.

“Much ado about nothing”
Tomorrow is another day. Can’t think of one thing that has changed or made better…
Absolutely true Dave but brain dead people don’t listen they do seem to bang their heads up against the wall and scream.
That’s why they bypassed Willits!! I mean you want people to protest and take over your city like Portland. Good thing it was off the highway when I drove by. Newsom sucks get on his ass!!!
Over 1000 people out along Main St. In solidarity with one another, peaceful. friendly and kind, in a town of 5000… All of us horrified about what the T. Administration is doing to destroy democracy. Isn’t that the news? Isn’t that what democracy looks like?
Melinda: I think you are confusing a day of protest against America with the annual Willits Frontier Days Parade, which celebrates our cultural history.
It’s the Progressive Movement that will destroy democracy with a return to open borders, illegals allowed to vote in our elections, and tearing down monuments that celebrate our cultural history, (etc.)
No Kings Day in Fort Bragg had Mexican flags. Is that what democracy looks like?
“Millions of Americans spent their Saturday standing in the sun, carrying flags, holding signs, bringing their children and their parents and their neighbors, because they still believe this country is worth fighting for. They are right, and in November, they are going to prove it. That is why I still have hope for America, and you should too.” – Heather Delaney Reese
Yes Dave. What flag would have been carrying to represent your original roots? US is not just a straight white man country. Never was. We are from all around the world, remember. Our dear Statue of Liberty invited the poor to our shores.
Melinda: In New York City at the “No Kings” rally, demonstrators waved Communist flags. Does this look like Democracy?
Biggest crock of crap I think anyone has said and sometime!
Melinda: To answer your question, my roots would carry no flag as you wrongly assume it would…Native Americans had no flags, unless they were taken in battle with the US Cavalry.
Historically, the Statue of Liberty resting on Ellis Island was used for LEGAL immigration. Democrats often conflate legal immigrants with illegal immigrants to strengthen their argument in support of open borders. However, without a border we are no longer a country, a country of laws. If you hate America and it’s laws, our freedoms, and way of life…then, yes, a Mexican flag is appropriate for you to wave.
Not even close to 1,000 people were out there on Main Street and at Bud Snider Park combined or at once. Loving the continued use of Trump’s playbook by these eco-terrorists! Hypocrisy to the rescue.
Agree. Just after 10 AM anyway, there couldn’t have been over 20, just a couple on each intersection.
You will often see exaggerations like that when news reporters become advocates. It will not be critical of course, just feel good yellow journalism.
A little history: “Yellow journalism was a late 19th-century style of sensationalist reporting characterized by exaggerated headlines, false claims, and lurid, emotional stories aimed at increasing circulation.”
Clown-nose Bill wears a white hat that says “RESIST.” Resist what?
Lower taxes, lower inflation, secure borders, less crime, less drugs, cheaper medicine, higher-paying jobs, a strong stock market, less fraud and no Iran nuclear weapon aimed at the USA?
It’s always the same few MAGAs, flooding the comments with hateful ignorance & lies, whenever there are news stories about folks standing up for our democracy. They’re so easily triggered into a toddler tantrum.
Their knee jerk blathering proves that these protests are making a difference & they motivates us to do more.
Just like the fly wont listen to the bumble bee then the bee says honey is better than shit. Talkin to you Debbie.
Thanks, Debbie, for standing up for democracy and diversity! Strength in numbers. The President is a con man, enriching himself and cronies while lying big time to the people.
Where does my brain dead enough to constantly tell you how wrong you are. You continue to push your narrative on everyone else here in town and we don’t want to hear it! All we want is for you to shut up and get about your business without bothering everybody else. You seem to think it’s your business to tell everybody else what they should think but it’s not. Get a life lady!
You fools didn’t stand up for democracy, just a bunch of nut jobs out there being obnoxious thinking the other 4,000 people in town support their freak show protest, wanna do something constructive, go clean up all the homeless camps and trash that libtard thinking has allowed to destroy the local creeks littering and defecating in the waterways between puffs off their drug pipes and shots from their dirty drug needles they leave laying around town
I want to know who the liar was that wrote this article and who the Liars were that allowed it to be in print! I live in Willits and I went all through well it’s that day and there wasn’t any more than maybe 15 or 20. Where in the heck you got a thousand is beyond me! What a bunch of idiots trying to get other people to stand behind them but if you lie you’re not going to get anybody to stand behind you!
Absolutely!
I concur.
Stop calling Trump a pedophile, I love him and it hurts my feelings.
Trolling comment noted
For all you followers of leftist ideology, mark your calendars, May 1 is the next big event! The call is going out for a “No Kings Day” in conjunction with a nationwide economic strike on May 1, which is the traditional May Day holiday long celebrated by communist and socialist movements as a day of mass political action! Like hand in glove, a perfect fit. As District 3 Supervisor John Haschak will probably say, “This is what Democracy looks like.” (😵)
The participants in these protests reveal the results of propaganda, social contagion, unexamined beliefs, virtue-signaling, and attention-seeking.
They can’t name one nation that will allow you to overstay a visa, or simply move in, without being deported.
They refuse to admit that allowing transwomen into women’s spaces also opens the door to mentally ill blokes who intend harm.
They disregard tragic stories of detransitioners while promoting the irreversible butchering of vulnerable and confused youth.
Their arguments on every controversial issue are steeped in emotion rather than logic.
We must unify our nation to neutralize the actual threats we are facing – the influence of Israel over our politicians, and the muslim population that has exploded here.
