MENDOCINO CO., 2/16/26 – MendoParks will oversee Adopt-A-Beach cleanups at four Mendocino Coast locations after becoming the county’s newest program manager, the nonprofit announced Thursday.

The Adopt-A-Beach program launched in Humboldt County in 1979 and expanded statewide in the 1990s. It operates under the California Coastal Commission and supports ongoing efforts to remove marine debris and maintain public access to the coast, including the annual Coastal Cleanup Day.

The nonprofit MendoParks will coordinate up to three volunteer cleanups per year at Hare Creek, Jug Handle, Van Damme and Big River beaches. The management role includes recruiting local businesses, schools and community groups to serve as individual beach managers, the organization said.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the California Coastal Act, the 1976 law that established long-term protections for California’s shoreline, habitats and coastal views.

MendoParks, founded in 1984, raises funds, provides educational activities, helps with park improvements, and manages visitor centers at 10 state parks in the county.
