MENDOCINO CO., 3/12/26 – Mendocino National Forest officials are seeking public input as they prepare an application for state funding to support off-highway vehicle recreation and trail maintenance.
The forest plans to apply for about $719,394 through the California State Parks Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division grants program. The proposed project has a total cost of about $1.1 million, including matching funds. (Find a copy of the proposal below this article.)
The funding would support ground operations and maintenance work on the forest’s motorized trail system, which includes more than 1,600 miles of routes open to off-highway vehicles, according to the grant application.
Officials said public comments will help shape the proposal before it is submitted.
Preliminary applications will be available for review beginning March 3 through the California Department of Parks and Recreation’s Online Grants Application system at https://olga.ohv.parks.ca.gov/egrams_ohmvr/user/ReviewProjects.aspx. Comments will be accepted through May 4.
The state program provides financial assistance to agencies and organizations that maintain and operate off-highway vehicle recreation areas while protecting wildlife habitat, soils and other natural resources.
Forest staff will review the public feedback before submitting the final application in June.
