MENDOCINO CO., 2/25/26 – Caltrans said a portion of state Highway 1 remains closed south of Elk as of Wednesday evening due to a mudslide blocking the roadway.

Highway 1 is closed from 8000 Highway 1 to approximately 10000 Highway 1.

The closure comes after an atmospheric river brought heavy rain to the area, resulting in multiple road closures and hazardous travel conditions across the county.

According to Mike McGuire, D-Healdsburg, crews have begun working to clear the landslide from the highway and are continuing through the night. He said the slide remains active and removal could be slow. Caltrans reports $2 million of emergency funds was allocated for the removal.

No estimated time of reopening has been provided, Caltrans said.
