MENDOCINO CO., 1/27/26 – One person died and another was injured in a crash on U.S. Highway 101 in Mendocino County on Monday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash was reported around 9:25 p.m. on Highway 101 south of Rattlesnake Summit and north of Laytonville.

CHP investigators said a Ford Escape was heading south on the highway when it traveled across the double yellow lines and sideswiped a Chevrolet Silverado with four people inside and a Freightliner big-rig.

The Ford driver was pronounced dead at the scene after the car came to rest straddling the double yellow lines. The Chevrolet hit a dirt embankment, overturned and came to rest on its side, and a passenger in the vehicle had to be taken to a hospital with minor injuries, according to the CHP.

Investigators have not determined the cause of the collision, and the name of the Ford driver who died was not immediately available.
