UKIAH, CA., 12/5/25 – The Ukiah City Council appointed a new mayor and vice mayor at its meeting Wednesday.
The City Council appointed Vice Mayor Susan Sher as mayor and Councilmember Juan Orozco as vice mayor. The incoming mayor and vice mayor will officially begin their terms on Dec. 17.
According to a staff report, the City Council annually appoints the mayor and vice mayor from among the council members on a rotation system, as required by a city resolution.
The staff report reads, “It is the policy of the City Council that the office of mayor be rotated among the members of the City Council and that the mayor shall serve a term of one year or until a successor is appointed. The City Council shall choose one of its members as mayor, and one of its members as vice mayor, at a regular meeting at the end of November or early December depending on the holiday and election cycles.”
In a statement, Sher said she is eager to begin her term and tackle the issues facing the Ukiah City Council.
“I am grateful and excited to become the next mayor of Ukiah. The city is facing several challenges and opportunities,” Sher said. “I have faith that collaboration between our hard-working staff, council members and an engaged and informed public will successfully guide us through the next era.”
The Ukiah City Council will hold a reception before their Dec. 17 meeting to swear the two into their new roles. The reception will begin at 4:30 p.m.
The Dec. 17 meeting is scheduled for 5:15 p.m. at the Ukiah Civic Center at 300 Seminary Ave. Residents can also participate virtually via a Zoom link at the top of the agenda when it becomes available.
