MENDOCINO CO., 12/6/25 – A prescribed burn is scheduled to begin Monday at the Point Arena–Stornetta Unit of the California Coastal National Monument, the Bureau of Land Management said.

The burn is part of an ongoing effort by the BLM’s Ukiah Field Office to reduce wildfire risk and restore coastal prairie. Work in the area has included removing hazardous trees and thinning encroaching conifers, along with earlier prescribed fire treatments.

The 1,665-acre unit, located just north of Point Arena, features coastal terraces, meadows and bluffs. It is home to migratory birds, harbor seals and several rare plant species, and offers views of the Point Arena Lighthouse.

Smoke and fire activity may be visible from California state Highway 1.

The BLM said burn operations is likely to continue through the spring. Burns will only occur when weather and fuel moisture conditions are safe.
