MENDOCINO CO., 11/19/25 – Mendocino National Forest officials announced Wednesday that Christmas tree permits are now available.
According to the national forest, the opportunity to cut down Christmas trees not only creates a special family tradition but also benefits the environment.
Forest health experts identify densely populated areas that can benefit from thinning smaller trees, the national forest said. These are “trees that tend to be perfect size for Christmas trees. Removing these trees in designated areas helps other trees grow larger and can open areas that provide forage for wildlife.”
People can purchase a tree permit online at https://www.recreation.gov/tree-permits/TP31 or by visiting forest offices in Covelo, Upper Lake, Willows or Stonyford. Permits may also be available at select retailers near the forest.
Fourth graders who participate in the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Every Kid Outdoors program are eligible for one free Christmas tree by applying for a permit at recreation.gov and entering their pass or voucher number. According to the national forest, trees cut on forest land in Mendocino or Lake counties may not be transported to other counties because the area is part of the Sudden Oak Death Quarantine Area.
