MENDOCINO CO., 10/6/25 – The public is invited Tuesday to tour a new commercial icehouse in Noyo Harbor, just south of Fort Bragg, before it opens for operations, Harbormaster Anna Neumann said.
Icehouses are essential to the commercial fishing industry, helping preserve freshly caught fish before they are processed or sold. The new facility will hold 20 tons of flake ice at near-freezing temperatures, allowing catches to be stored for hours or days while maintaining freshness.
Funded through California Jobs First — a statewide initiative supporting regional economic development and sustainable employment — the project is part of the Noyo Harbor Revitalization Project’s efforts to strengthen the harbor’s economic and environmental sustainability.

According to the Noyo Center for Marine Science, about 80 independently owned commercial vessels operate out of Noyo Harbor, landing catches that range from salmon to sea urchins. Many of those boats are expected to use the new icehouse.
“We’re excited to share this milestone with the community that has supported the harbor through every step,” Neumann said. “This project is about more than ice — it’s about ensuring the future of our fishing fleet and the working waterfront that defines Fort Bragg.”
The public walk-through of the icehouse will take place on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon at 19101 S. Harbor Drive in Fort Bragg. For more information, call (707) 964-4719.
